Wal-Mart West Loop Bound

Earlier this month Target announced their plans to add another Chicago location to the downtown area, and days later discount chain giant Wal-Mart filed a building permit for their new West Loop home.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plans to open a  neighborhood market store at the Presidential Towers apartment complex  at 555 W. Madison St. The 26,491 square- foot store will be  on the ground floor of the apartment towers, according the filed building permit.

This comes as a  part of Wal-Mart’s efforts to expand their stores beyond suburban areas and into cities. In 2006 , a Wal-Mart store was opened in on Chicago’s West side in the Austin community;  and in 2009 City Council gave approval for two more locations to be added to the Southside.

The two store locations, one in Chatham and the other in the Pullman park neighborhood, are 150,000-square-foot Walmart Supercenters. And after several months of heated debate between Wal-Mart officials and Labor Union leaders, who demanded livable wages for workers, construction and opening dates have finally been set.

The Chatham store is slated to begin this spring and open in early 2012, and the Pullman store is scheduled to open in 2013, both full supercenters. No set date has been announced for the West Loop location, and it will be the first small grocery store for the big box chain, in Illinois.
