Police car accident kills 1, injuries 4

One man dead and four people were injured between an accident a police squad car and another vehicle early Monday morning.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office later identified the dead man as Shawn Garrett, 25, of the 6300 block of South Normal Avenue. He was reported as the passenger in the car.

According to police, the vehicle ran through a red light at the intersection of 69th and Indiana early Monday morning, said Chicago Police News Affairs spokesman John Mirabelli.

After striking the squad car, the vehicle came to rest after it struck a pole, Mirabelli said.

Although conflicting information provided the Cook County medical examiner’s office, indicated the squad car crashed into the other vehicle.

An EMS Plan 1, which automatically brings five ambulances to the scene was called, according to Chicago Fire spokesman Richard Rosado.

Three people were taken to area hospitals in critical condition. Two more people were taken in serious condition, Rosado said.

Garrett succumbed to his injuries at 2:49 a.m Monday morning at Stroger Hospital.
