Barack Brews Beer?

Party on!

Last week, major news outlets including National Public Radio and Fox News reported that President Barack Obama himself brewed his own beer at the White House.

While the Obamas are indeed the first White House couple to ever serve home-brewed beer to their guests as they did at last month’s Super Bowl party, it is NOT true that they brewed the White House Honey Ale themselves.

White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford and Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses are actually the ones who are responsible for brewing the honey-flavored beverage, as per Mr. and Mrs. Obama’s personal request.

According to a White House aide in regards to when the ale was first served on Super Bowl Sunday, the Obamas purchased the home-brewing equipment themselves using their own funds, and asked the White House chef staff to create a beer to remember.

“It’s a collaborative effort,” says Comerford.

The bottle labels for the White House Honey Ale were also created in-house.

In addition to the custom ale, the Obamas are also the first presidential couple to install a beehive, which is tended to by an official Bee Keeper in Chief named Charlie Brandts.

As for more brewing at the White House, spokesman for the East Wing Semonti Stephens says, “It is very safe to assume that there will be more White House beer in the future.”
