Near North Side Hotel Evacuated

A hazardous material response was called to a Near North Side hotel because of a gas main rupture Thursday morning, officials said.

A level two hazmat, EMS Plan 2, and a Still and Box response were called just before 10 a.m. to the Affinia Chicago hotel at 166 East Superior, according to a fire department spokesman.

The 2-inch gas line was struck by a construction crew in the area, said the fire department spokesperson.

People were being evacuated from the hotel and other buildings around the rupture, according to Office of Emergency Management spokesman Roderick Drew.

Streets around the area were closed down for safety, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli, including N. Ontario/St. Clair, McClurg/Fairbanks, Huron/Michigan, Huron/St. Clair, Superior/Michigan, and Rush/Superior.

A joint department command center is setup at Michigan and Fairbanks, said Marabelli.
