MTV’s ‘Teen Mom’ show glamorizing teen

MTV’s hit series ‘16&pregnant’ and ‘Teen Mom’ are at the center of criticism that these shows are glamorizing and making teen parenting look cool. Now, eyebrows are being raised when it was revealed that 3 friends of the show’s teen star Jenelle Evans were pregnant. The pregnancies fueled speculation that the teenagers got pregnant for fame’s sake in hopes of becoming the next teen mom star. According to abcnews.com, two of the women, 18-year-old Keeley Sanders and 17-year-old Lauren Pruitt, said that they didn’t get pregnant for fame and didn’t enter a pregnancy pact with one another.

Many believe that even if MTV aren’t glorifying teen parenting there are plenty of examples of being a teen mom in pop culture. Bristol Palin who appeared on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ is just one example of how young girls may be under the illusion that they too can reach fame through this. The teen mom stars make a 6 figure salary, are on the cover of magazines and even receive endorsement deals and calendar deals all from becoming teen parents.

The shows are top ratings for MTV and are supposed to be a form of birth control by displaying the hardships and sacrifices these young moms are making. But this controversial discussion has celebrities speaking out. Back in January, Kim Kardashian took to her blog to warn young girls against idolizing the young parents from teen mom. Kim wrote, “It seems that shows like Teen Mom are all of a sudden making teen pregnancy seem cool in the eyes of young girls… but girls, these are not people you should idolize!”
