Man shot by police during Father’s Day celebration

A man was in critical condition Sunday evening after he began shooting at a Father’s Day celebration, according to officials.

The shooting occurred at about 6:25 p.m. at Grand Crossing Park on the 7600 block of South Ingleside Avenue, according to a release issues by the Chicago Police News Affairs Unit.

The officers were confronted by the armed offender, who pointed and fired the a gun in the direction of the officers, the release said. Officers fired back at the offender and the offender was struck.

The offender was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, said Chicago Fire Department Chief Joseph Roccasalva. The officers were taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in good-to-fair condition, Roccasalva said.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
