Japan Elects First Openly Gay Official

An openly gay man has been elected as a public official for the Toshima Ward Assembly in Japan.

Newly elected Taiga Ishikawa is an active member of the LGBT community and has published books promoting sexual equality for all, with one of his works entitled Where’s My Boyfriend?.

Says 36-year-old Ishikawa, “I hope this news will give a hope to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people who still feel isolated from the society.”

This is the first time in the history of Japanese politics that an openly gay candidate has been elected for public office.
