Funeral for Fred Rice

A funeral service was held for former and first African-American Superintendent Fred Rice, Jr. of the Chicago Police Department Friday.

Viewing took place from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Holy Name Cathedral in the River North neighborhood, with the funeral following immediately. In attendance was Mayor Richard M. Daley, former superintendent of the Chicago Police Department Leroy Martin, and a reflection by current superintendent Jody Weis.

Rice was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease nearly two decades ago and in 2001 he was diagnosed with lung cancer.

Rice passed away at Manor Care Palos Heights East on Jan 10th. Rice was 84 years.

Rice leaves behind his wife Thelma, son Lyle and daughter Judith.
