Encouraging

Last night the Bulls played the most exciting game of the season as they beat the best team in the Western Conference in OT 113-111. The Golden State Warriors have the best winning percentage in the NBA at .837, and at home they’re an astounding 21-2 which is again the best record in the league. Last night however the Bulls played unbelievably well showing the NBA that they can beat anyone, anywhere when their stars are playing in sync.

Derrick Rose had 30 points last night to go along with Pau Gasol’s double-double of 18 points, 16 rebounds. Gaol missed a triple double by just two assists and added four blocks. The Bulls offensively challenged team of last season was long gone last night as they scored 113PTS on the road, something that would’ve been unheard of without the two players who mattered the most last night. Gaol and Rose have clearly given this team a lethal one-two punch on the offensive, and with the play defensively of guys like Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson, the Bulls were able to stay competitive all game, pulling out an improbable win.

Noah himself additionally added a double-double with 18pts and 15 rebounds. The Bulls pulled down 13 more boards than the Warriors which was a big key for the win. On most nights the Bulls are going to have an advantage on the glass and last night was particularly true. The Warriors don’t play with a true power forward as they tend to field a team of majority outside shooters. Last night Klay Thompson continued his high offensive output with 30pts to go along with Stephen Curry’s 21. David Lee was the only big man of consequence for the Warriors as he added 24pts and 9 rebounds. Lee’s only listed as 6′ 9″ and is small for his position. The Warriors aren’t a very deep bench, and you could tell in the overtime session. The minutes for the guards and forwards were starting to wear on the team as they were continuously settling for outside looks instead of trying to drive inside.

The Bulls bench players contributed nicely to the overall effort in both minutes and production. Nikola Mirotic played 31 minutes while adding 12pts and 7 rebounds in the win. Taj Gibson had 24 minutes off the bench and nearly had a double-double himself with 10pts, 9 rebounds. The only downside to last night’s game for Chicago was the number of turnovers for Derrick Rose who had 11 in 43 minutes. The Bulls got a big shot from Kirk Hinrich at the end of regulation to nearly win the game in 48-minutes. Chicago played good possession basketball in the extra frame, and the win is hopefully something they can build upon as they continue this West Coast trip that’ll take them to the Staples Center to play the Lakers, and then the next night sees them heading to Phoenix. Both of those teams aren’t nearly the same quality as the Warriors with the Lakers being one of the worst teams in the league. The trip as a whole sees the Bulls out of town until Sunday the 10th of February when they’ll return to host Sacramento.

The Bulls could really do themselves some good if they can continue to win up until the time they face Houston who’s again one of the best teams in the league especially at home where they’re 15-7. The Rockets are the only team fro the remainder of the trip that has a better winning percentage than Chicago. Derrick Rose’s 30pts is very encouraging, and the overall play of the team has now seen them win three of their last four. Hopefully this is more of the team we see for the rest of the year and into the playoffs.
