East Coast Crumbs Meet the West

An East Coast bakery made it’s big debut in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, Friday afternoon and welcomed customers with a sweet giveaway.

The line was wrapped around the building as Chicagoans waited outside of Crumbs Bake Shop to receive a free gourmet cupcake, as a part of the big grand opening. A glass cases inside of the quaint and welcoming bake shop, were filled with a delectable variety of cupcakes in all colors, flavors and sizes.

Alderman Bob Fioretti stood alongside Harley Bauer, Chief Development Officer of Crumbs, for the official ribbon cutting ceremony.

Alderman Fioretti said he is pleased to have the new business in Chicago, and is looking forward to welcoming future locations. “We’ll have them in the South Loop, West Loop and even on the north side so everyone can enjoy them,” said Fioretti. He was left speechless after taking his first bite, giving the chocolate cupcake a thumbs up.

The bake shop, established in New York in 2003 and the self-proclaimed originators of the gourmet cupcake, offers an assortment of visually stimulating cupcakes, three different sizes and an array of other sweets and drinks, including homemade sodas.

During the free 1,000 cupcake giveaway, customers had their choice of  a colossal sized (or muffin sized) cupcake and could pick flavors like chocolate pecan pie, white hot chocolate; or some of their popular and more familiar flavors like red velvet or peanut butter cup.  They are even working on signature Chicago-style cupcake, which will be uniquely designed and reflective of a city that knows food.

“People have such an appreciation for food in this city, much like New York,” said Bauer, which is one of the reasons the city was chosen as the first for the Midwest. Alderman Fioretti added that having small businesses such as Crumbs hit major cities, is a good way to help small businesses expand. “What makes America so great is that small businesses an grow.”

The family owned business has other locations across the U.S. in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Virginia, Connecticut and are scheduled to open several other sites this year. For more information and a full menu visit www.crumbs.com.
