Chicago Athlete Drowned in Florida

A local track runner was found dead in a lake near a Florida resort yesterday, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s office (Fla.).

Jasmine Crenshaw, 22 a former Hyde Park Academy track athlete was in Florida with the Central State University (Ohio) women’s track team for a competition over the weekend.

According to a statement on Central State’s website, the team was staying at the Summer Bay Resort, when Crenshaw went missing Saturday evening after she was last seen swimming in a nearby lake.

On Sunday, March 2oth divers recovered her body, with the reported cause of  as an accidental drowning, according to Lake County officials.

Crenshaw was a tranfer student to Central State University from Lewis University in Romeoville, where she was also on the track team.

Following Jasmine Crenshaw’s disapperance the President of Central State University John W. Garland  and visited the men’s and women’s teams in Florida and extended his thoughts to Crenshaw’s family.

“Central State University is a family of students, staff and faculty, and losing a family member is difficult. This bright, intelligent student was full of life and taken from us much too soon.”

Central State students are currently on spring break, but the University has set a memorial service for Monday, March 28, 2011 at 7:00 pm in the Paul Robeson Cultural and Performing Arts Center in her rememberance.
