Byrd Is The Word In Cubs Win

Chicago- Why is it when something good happens, something bad has to follow.  Carlos Pena starts to show us why he is getting paid the big bucks driving in runs for his club, and then gets a sprained thumb.  Andrew Cashner starts a great game against the Diamondbacks Tuesday and then has to come out in the sixth with tightness in his shoulder.

Next, Marlon Byrd will trip over a suitcase in his house and break his wrist.  Byrd had a great game against the Diamondbacks Tuesday and hopefully he wont have to pay for it.  He had three hits in the game and drove in the go ahead run in the bottom of the seventh.

Tyler Colvin making his first start in the big leagues at first base with the Cubs helped extend the lead in the third with a two run blast into right center field.  Colvin was filling in for injured Cub Carlos Pena who tweaked his thumb the other day.

“We’ll take a look at him tomorrow and see how he’s doing. …… He just got his thumb bent back,”Cubs manager Mike Quade said.

Cashner looked good pitching 5.1 innings giving up two hits and only allowing one earned run.

“He was great all game and threw the ball extremely well and the last few pitches before we got him out of there he felt a little tightness and that’s all I needed to hear,”  Quade said.

James Russell was awarded the win, throwing 1.2 innings giving up two hits, striking out two, and not allowing a run.

“You can’t leave here without talking about Russ,” Quade said. “We were in a bit of a mess pitching wise and he picked us up. I absolutely needed him. Him giving us the eighth, the finishing up the way he did was fantastic.”

Sean Marshall started the ninth going for his first save opportunity, he allowed one run on one hit and struck out one.  Starlon Castro and Tyler Colvin really helped out in the ninth, both making nice plays getting Xavier Nady thrown out at first for the second out.  Marshall then threw five off speed pitches to get Willie Bloomquist out on strikes to wrap up the save getting the Cubs their third win this season 6-5.

Chicago will be at again Wednesday afternoon playing the last game of the series at 1:20pm against the Diamondbacks at Wrigley.
