Arizona Congresswoman among 12 shot at store

Tucson, Ariz. — Rep. Gabrielle Gifford of Arizona was shot in the head Saturday, as well as an aide, and an unknown number of others were also wounded or killed when an assailant opened fire outside a grocery store.

A spokesman for Gifford’s, C.J. Karamargin, said the congresswoman was in surgery as of 1 p.m. local time and that an unspecified number of Gifford’s staff members were injured in the shooting. Gifford knew no other information on the conditions of the injured or on the circumstances of the shooting.

U.S. Capitol Police say the shooter is in custody as one official said he carried out the attack with an automatic weapon.

President Barack Obama called the shooting “an unspeakable tragedy.”

The Democratic lawmaker was meeting with constituents when the shooting occurred, officials said.
