5-year-old dead after falling in Jackson Park Harbor

A 5-year-old boy is dead Sunday evening after falling into the Jackson Park Harbor, according to officials.

According to reports, multiple calls came in around 4:23 p.m. on the 6500 block of South Promontory Drive reporting a boy had gone under the water, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brian. The Chicago Fire Department, Chicago Police Marine Unit, and U.S. Coast Guard all responded to the call.

The child and his parents were walking on the D Dock when he fell in around 4:23 p.m. and went under, said Chicago Fire Department Batallion Chief Richard Cooper.

The Chicago Fire Department helicopter arrived first to the scene and dropped two divers into the 16-foot water, who executed a full water rescue response, Cooper said. It was reported that civilians on nearby boats also jumped in to assist. Fire department rescuers pulled the child out of the water after a 7- to 10-minute search, Cooper said.

The child was taken to  in critical condition after being taken out of the harbor by divers, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Chief Joe Roccasalva. He later died from his injuries at the hospital.
