2-alarm fire called after mattress starts fire

A 2-alarm fire was called for an apartment building on the city’s North Side when a man used a lighter to look for something under a mattress and the mattress caught fire.

At about 4:45 a.m., fire officials responded to apartment 314, and called the 2-11 alarm and an EMS Plan 1 to the Wilson Windsor Apartments at 915 W. Wilson Ave, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

A 57-year-old man was looking for something under a mattress and used a lighter to help him see. The mattress caught fire and caused extensive damage to the apartment, Langford said.

The man was transported to Weiss Memorial Hospital in fair condition for smoke inhalation, Langford said.

Three other people were treated and released on the scene, he said.
